Puppy Year One / Puppy socialization before vaccines are finished
Puppy socialization before vaccines are finished
Quick answerThe American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior says the primary and most important time for socialization is the first three months of life, and that puppies should be socialized before they are fully vaccinated. Do it carefully: avoid dog parks and unknown dogs.

What the AVSAB says
The first three months are the primary window, when sociability outweighs fear.
Puppies can start classes as early as 7 to 8 weeks, with at least one set of vaccines at least 7 days before the first class and a first deworming.
Avoid dog parks and other places with many dogs of unknown vaccination status.
Use positive reinforcement: frequent rewards, praise, petting, play or treats.
The statement says behavior problems, not infectious disease, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age.
A safe exposure plan
People: different ages, hats, beards, uniforms, wheelchairs
Surfaces: grass, tile, metal grates, steps
Sounds at low volume with treats: vacuum, doorbell, traffic
The statement warns against overstimulation, shown as excessive fear, withdrawal or avoidance. If your puppy freezes, hides or tries to leave, make the exposure smaller and end on a good note.
Log it
Keep a list of what your puppy has met and how they reacted. PawLine’s daily notes are a good place for it, and you can share the notes with your trainer or vet.
